14,476 Meals for the Hungry

17,371 Pounds of Food Collected

More than $56,000 Raised to Fight Hunger in Chicago

Nearly eight hundred kindred souls gathered on a balmy 40 degree day to create the annual spectacularly-festive, extraordinarily-costumed, epically mobile food drive and charity shopping cart race — CHIditarod XIII. The sun-drenched Chicago streets were filled with more than 250 volunteers and 97 teams of 5 costumed and thoroughly excited humans, raising food and record-breaking funds in the pursuit of feeding the hungry while racing tricked-out shopping carts through 5 themed checkpoint establishments in the name of charity, prizes, and glory. Truly, a spectacle like none other, and a day to long remember.

The annual event raced through Chicago’s West Town Ukrainian Village neighborhoods, visiting five checkpoints each. Mahoney’s, Phyllis’s Musical Inn, Five Star Bar, Roots Handmade Pizza, and Cobra Lounge hosted costumed superstars with their own themes and contests for teams to participate in. All bars generously donate a portion of their proceeds to The CHIditarod Foundation to aid in our epic mission of fighting hunger in Chicago.

CHIditarod is always finding new ways to positively impact our community and those in need. This year we again collected unused toiletries for Sarah’s Circle, a non-profit agency serving women who are homeless or in need of a safe space. They also focus on women needing support because of domestic violence. Thank You to everyone who donated race day, at ChiditaBowl, and at the Burners Without Borders Chicago Winter Ball.

Food Drive

CHIditarod playfully calls itself “probably the world’s largest mobile food drive”, and we could not be more impressed by this year’s food drive success,

With the help of our friends and at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the CHIditarod XIII food drive collected enough food to provide 14,476 meals for Chicago’s hungry. Thank you CHIditarod participants for being amazing all-stars and for making a difference in the lives of many, many people.

Best in Food Drive :: The CHIvengers

The Chivengers avenged hunger this year at superhuman levels. This team brought in 2,525 pounds of food to give 2,104 meals to those in need.

Honorable Food Mentions

Chickiditarods were our second most food drive-driven team, bringing in 1,668 pounds of food, equivalent to 1,390 meals! A HUGE THANK YOU to these teams who help us make sure all Chicagoans have the food they need.

Art Carts

The art carts this year were a small but mighty group, diverse in experience and execution. From virgins who lived in a Yellow Submarine, to a Stone Age Secret Gentlemen’s Club, and the stalwart HoboQ dishing out tapas, everyone enjoyed snacks, music, and of course, FIRE!

Epic Fundraising

To date, the CHIditarod Foundation has give out $152,000 in grants to local nonprofits who share in our mission to stop hunger in Chicago. This year alone, our racers, volunteers, checkpoints, and organizers — with the help of their families, friends, and communities — raised more than $56,000 in support of this community grants program! Racers and volunteers raised more than ever before.

We will once again be able to fight hunger challenges, supporting community-centered initiatives that address hunger, food scarcity, and education via the CHIditarod Grant Program.

Most Epic Fundraising: 3GS&T

Once again, 3GS&T were the big winners in Fundraising. For the third year in a row they smashed the prior year’s donation record, raising an incredible $10,451.
In 2018, however, they were chased by a new rival, the breakfast cereal characters of Nomeward Bound.

2nd Most Epic Fundraising: Nomeward Bound

In an epic battle that had fans and Coreganizers alike watching their phones until the cutoff of 5:30pm on race day, 3GS&T just barely edged out Nomeward Bound, who finished with $10,207. That is an incredibly small margin. Nomeward Bound are true heroes in our eyes and deserve just as much admiration.

3rd Most Epic Fundraising: The Chidiots

Last year’s challenger, The Chidiots, rounded out the top three with an absolutely stellar amount of $6,244, and we deeply appreciate them – and everyone who contributed – for helping make this year’s grant pool even deeper.

Volunteers

While CHIditarod racers do wondrous things, none would be possible without the more than 250 brave and selfless volunteers that make CHIditarod happen. Volunteers are truly the MVPs of CHIditarod.

[one_half]
Not only do many of them fundraise, they also build the starting and finish lines, create immersive and exciting checkpoint environments, keep you safe while mobile, and have a blast right alongside you. To our volunteers, we honor and salute you all. Thanks.

Visit our grant page to learn about the program and how your organization can apply during the next grant cycle.

A tour through a mobile gallery, led by a boastful but engaging host was this year’s big prize winner. Stretched over two carts, this art collection included six classic paintings, a sculpture garden, graffiti art, a 60-second audio tour, the obligatory velvet ropes, and of course, wine and cheese. Sight, sound, and motion (Munch’s “The Scream” actually did just that…) made for one of the most creative and interactive carts of the day.

This team was so well-loved that they also have been awarded the 2018 People’s Choice Award based on the feedback received from our post-event all-racer surveys. Stellar effort!

Don’t let the balloons and tinsel on this Barbie Dream Closet fool you – these are Power Paper Dolls, not lightweights! The ladies of 3GS&T brought life-sized, laminated cutouts of some of the strongest, most influential women around. From TV pioneer Lucille Ball to astronaut Mae Jemison to Lady Gaga (complete with Meat Dress), and of course, The Notorious RBG, these long-time racers swapped costumes amongst themselves and even other racers and Judges a chance to try on. So many outfits, so little time…[/one_half]

Another art theme takes a top prize as this Van Gogh cart didn’t merely offer up (gummy) sliced ears. A vision of the artist himself signed handmade, original paintings for Judges and timekeepers alike. Autographed on the spot, each one featured an aspect of CHIditarod, from a Chicago flag, to a Hancock Holdup logo, to a shopping cart, all in the setting of an actual Van Gogh painting.

CHIditarod Foundation Seeks Board Members

The CHIditarod Foundation is seeking to add members to its Board of Directors. Read on for more details and instructions for how to apply.

Applications must be received by Sunday, January 24 2016 in order to be considered.

About the CHIditarod Foundation

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Chicago, IL, that hosts large, public events to promote community and creativity. Our work aims to provide Chicago residents with an outlet for artistic self-expression, impetus to build new social connections, and reliable channels for funneling their human, cultural, and financial resources towards the alleviation of food insecurity in our neighborhoods.

What we do

The CHIditarod Foundation operates two major programs. The first and oldest is the annual CHIditarod, a costumed shopping cart race that takes participants through the Wicker Park, Bucktown, and Ukrainian Village neighborhoods to raise food and funds against hunger in the greater Chicagoland area. This event raises thousands of pounds of food and tens of thousands of dollars annually.

Second, the CHIditarod runs an annual grant program, which provides local community organizations with the funding they need to tackle hunger and food insecurity directly. These funds are directed towards agencies who are seeding new programs, funding existing time-tested programs; developing innovative responses to hunger or food insecurity; or are working to fill the gaps in our current welfare services and social safety nets.

Board responsibilities

  • To be thoughtful and responsible stewards of the financial resources trusted to us by our donors.

  • To provide leadership and expertise to the rest of the board as well as the CHIditarod core event organizers throughout the year.
  • To act as an informal (and occasionally formal) ambassador and spokesperson for the organization.
  • To participate in CHIditarod programming and fundraising throughout the year.
  • To strive to maintain a mutually respectful and inclusive environment in all CHIditarod-related activities.
  • To maintain the confidentiality of our donors, applicants, grantees, volunteers and other participants in CHIditarod programming.

ChiditaBowl 2016

Let’s go Bowling.  An all-team, all-participant fundraiser for the 2016 CHIditarod. We had so much fun doing it in 2014 that we’re bringing it back for the winter of 2016.

[two_third]

Re-rollin’ Roughshod Over Hunger!

Date: January 15, 2016
Time: 10:00 pm until close

But, why?
First, because bowling is the 2nd best leisure sport on the planet (CHIditarod is the first, of course). Remember 2014’s bowling event? It was awesome. We’ll be returning to Timberlanes — one of Chicago’s classic independent bowling alleys — up on the north side. We start promptly at 10 pm (when league play ends) and hit it hard until close (2 am).

We’ll have music, a 16-bracket bowl-off (with modifications to prevent the hurriedness of 2014), an open bar package, probably some kickass trophies, and most importantly, an opportunity to rock out and roll down with fellow Chiditarodders collaboratively (indoors, no less). Save your cunning sabotage for race day, leave the cart at home, don your best bowling attire, pick up yer date, polish your balls, and make fundraising easy, fun, and raucous.

Your $40 ticket includes: bowling, shoe rental, photobooth, and a beer, wine, juice, and soda drink package from 10pm-2am. We’re working with an epic Chicago microbrewery to supply tasty some microbrew, too.

The event is limited to 200 firm — so there’s not a moment to spare.

$20 event package: All the perks but no drink package. This is really ONLY for Designated Drivers and those who will not be drinking. Still supportin’ the cause. We love you!

How does fundraising work?
When you purchase tickets you can specify what team (or person) that should get credit for the price of your tickets. The cost of your tickets will then be tallied in their team fundraising totals for 2016. It’s a really simple and accessible way for teams to fundraise — just come to the party! All proceeds benefit our beloved CHIditarod Foundation in support of our ongoing microgrant program ($70,000 granted and counting!) supporting Chicago-area 501c3 organizations who are solving hunger in innovative ways.

How will teams work for the bowling tournament?
Bowling teams can be 2-3 people each, no more, no less. If you want to participate in the tournament but are an individual, we’ll have a sign up sheet for lone wolves at registration where you can add your name to get paired up. We’ll also have some dedicated lanes just for random bowling.

Do I have to support a team racing in CHIditarod?
No, not at all! You can just come bowl with us and enjoy the evening. We’d love to have you. Honest.

CHIditarod XI is March 5, 2016

Since snow has officially fallen here in Chicago, it seems like a great time to share the date for our favorite frost fest — CHIditarod XI — is set for March 5, 2016. Stay tuned for the usual details about fundraising, registration (opening Jan 15, 2016), and more.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of all you righteous ‘Rodders, The CHIditarod Foundation 501(c)(3) provided $25,000 in 2015 micro-grants to 5 organizations fighting hunger in Chicago in innovative ways. Check out our blog post to learn more about the awesome work these organizations are doing in Chicago.

2015 Grant Awardees Announced

The CHIditarod Foundation is proud to announce our 2015 Grant Program awardees.

This year the CHIditarod Foundation raised an incredible $25,000 for its grant program. The funds will be distributed in $5,000 increments to five Chicago-area 501(c)(3) organizations that are directly fighting hunger, making an impact on local food sustainability, and/or empowering individuals and communities through food education.

We are thrilled to introduce the 2015 winning organizations!

CHIditarod’s grants to Chicago community-based organizations fighting hunger would not be possible without our generous donors, volunteers, and partners. We are grateful for their continued support.

The CHIditarod Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to solving the root causes of hunger through creative events and direct action. Our flagship event — The CHIditarod — brings together 1,000 people annually and has funded $70,000 in small grants for local anti-hunger initiatives since its inception. The CHIditarod takes place annually on the first Saturday in March. On March 7, 2015, CHIditarod celebrated its 10th anniversary with 650 costumed racers chasing their dreams of CHIditarod glory and making a difference in the fight against hunger. Since its humble beginnings in 2006, CHIditarod has raised more than 134,000 pounds of food and $145,000 in the fight to end hunger in the greater Chicago area.

Wall of Shame 2015

Wall of Shame 2015 - All with title

We tried something new this year. Something crazy. We put our faith in the good racers of CHIditarod and allowed them to keep their carts at the finish line overnight. I know, so gracious. While most teams were good citizens and came to pick up their stuff, a few of you still figured you could leave your mess for someone else to clean up. Such guile. While you may be few in number, your lack of tact is apparent. Go directly to the corner and think about what you’ve done. With gnashed teeth and the mild underpinnings of violence, we present the 2015 CHIditarod Wall of Shame.

CHIditarod’s Firm Stance Against Cultural Insensitivity

At Saturday’s race, a team with members in blackface was allowed to participate despite their refusal to comply with requests by board members and organizers that they remove the make-up. We deeply regret that our inability to respond quickly to this unexpected behavior and come to a consensus about handling this team’s refusal to accommodate requests that the make-up be removed resulted in our inaction, and that allowing this team’s participation marred the race day experience for our community.

CHIditarod’s core ethos encourages all participants to care for each other, make new friends, and take actions to improve our communities. This includes respecting each other’s humanity and taking accountability for our choices, an accountability that extends to CHIditarod’s Core Organizers. Our event participation guidelines and procedure to handle this situation fell short of what CHIditarod deserves, and we sincerely apologize for the harm this caused.

CHIditarod takes a firm stance that celebrating creative expression is never an excuse for cultural insensitivity or the perpetuation of systemic racial injustice. Such actions undermine CHIditarod’s mission to create positive, vibrant, and creative community engagement. The team in question has since been disqualified from CHIditarod X. Further, we are formulating a participation policy and event orientation program that will more clearly educate participants about what CHIditarod does and does not consider appropriate for any future events. We will also improve our standard operating framework for volunteers, staff, and organizers to address the communications gaps and procedural bottlenecks that contributed to this situation.

We thank the CHIditarod community, partners, and supporters for holding the event and its organizers to our stated principles of positive community engagement. CHIditarod owes its success to your hard work and dedication over the past decade, and we are committed to do better by you all moving forward. Please feel free to contact us at neighbors@chiditarod.org with concerns, ideas or suggestions.

CHIditarod VIII mushed into the record books on Saturday March 2, 2013. Costumed teams of 5 humans ran a 4.8ish mile race between 5 of 7 local checkpoints in Chicago’s West Town, Wicker Park, and Ukranian Village neighborhoods. Uniting 149 racing teams and nearly 300 volunteers, some have said it was the greatest CHIditarod to date.

Our teams, checkpoints, and volunteers catapulted CHIditarod’s hunger fighting efforts to new heights in 2013. The Greater Chicago Food Depository returned as the beneficiary of our epic food drive. They reported a total weigh-in of a whopping 17,133 pounds, equating to 14,128 meals to feed Chicago’s hungry. Our checkpoints held food drives for the first time, netting 929* pounds.

The Area Three Allstars, one of CHIditarod’s most fabled teams — and winner of the 2013 Most Epic Fundraiser award — raised $8,968 through a multitude of fundraising initiatives. ** They were hotly followed by The Derailers ($7,801.69) and Action-Squad ($6,705.00). We were and are blown away!!

The primary beneficiary for CHIditarod VIII fundraising is our very own NFP – The CHIditarod Foundation. In the upcoming months, the foundation will be providing grants to local organizations who are combating hunger here in Chicago. Read more about the Foundation and our mission.

The Derailers returned to defend their title of Best Art Cart. Their efforts were well deserved, with a theme of 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, they built a scale replica of Captain Nemo’s Nautilus with the enormous giant squid from the deep. Bubbles abounded as they “swam” down the street in full underwater gear. Their attention to detail is simply astounding. In second place was the Tempus Fugitives, who built an incredible, functional Time Machine.

Never one to disappoint, Action Squad returned for their 8th consecutive year to win 2013’s Best in Show. This years contribution to the CHIditarod came in the form of the Action Squad Diner. Complete with hand-made barstools, flashing sign, “orders up” bell, and laminated menu they served up food themed after each of their past cart entries. Their lovely waitresses took orders and kept the coffee flowing while the busboy mopped up any spills.

CHIditarod’s artistry has never been richer as teams amazed onlookers, judges, and each other with the most elaborate, interactive, and fun themes ever concocted. Additionally, we were graced with seven Art Carts in 2013, including the return of 5th year beloved BBQ veterans HoboQ and a fiery new team Hellzapoppin’ who served up popcorn with all the trimmings. The Secret Gentlemen’s Club was back with two carts this year, an enormous cake and an even more enormous “present” with a continuous birthday party inside. The cake included delicious baked goods — netting them the Best Food Cart prize. Our taste buds are still tingling.

People’s Choice Award

No CHIditarod results would be complete without a few after-the-race prizes. As anyone who’s participated in CHIditarod will tell you – there’s far more going on than any one, let alone twenty, persons can observe and acurately judge, especially in such a short amount of time.  It takes days, weeks, months for all of the pictures, footage, stories, and bruises to heal. That’s why we honor a few select teams after the glory of race day. This year we bring you the People’s Choice award, resoundingly going to: Action-Squad. Check out the quotes from our post-race survey:

** Fundraising Details: Area 3 Allstars fundraised in 2 ways. They used the GCFD’s fundraising website ($7,610.50), and raised the remaining funds on race day which goes towards the CHIditarod Foundation ($1,375). All remaining funds by all other teams are going towards the Foundation. There are expenses related to all of this fundraising — fees from our online partners WePay, Paypal and Dwolla will be reported once all accounting is complete.

2012 Sabotage Report

robot-graph-point-clipartSabotage is a long standing tradition of the CHIditarod. Often attempted, seldom nuanced. A minute to learn, a lifetime to master. Sabotage is an often-controversial aspect of the event within the teams. It keeps the race… interesting.

Each year, CHIditarod happily gains popularity and welcomes a controlled amount of newcomers. A result of this growth is that more unsuspecting folks become potential `easy targets` for saboteurs. For the second consecutive year, we emailed a post-race survey to all members of the CHIditarod VII teams. The following report was generated from those survey responses, focusing on:

  1. The responders’ years of participation in the CHIditarod
  2. The relationship between a racer’s level of experience and the likelihood that they dished out or received sabotage.

It has Charts and Stuff and Things.

Behold: The 2012 CHIditarod Sabotage Report.

CONCLUSIONS

  • An interesting find — Men are 45% more likely than women to be saboteurs.
  • First, we have a great representation among our racers in terms of age and gender. We’re happy about this. We really hope you guys keep coming out to play. We like you.
  • Second, sabotage continues to get more and more creative every year. Racers force us to re-think our sabotage taxonomy every year, because they keep doing crazier and crazier stuff.
  • Third, the trend that we thought we were seeing—of first time racers falling victim to sabotage more often—seems to be disappearing. Either we were wrong the first time around, or newbies are coming to the race wiser and more prepared, or racers are getting more equitable with their wanton destruction.
  • Fourth, since we have more males reporting acts of sabotage than females, we can assume one of two things. Either there really are more male saboteurs than female, or men just like telling their war stories in the survey more than women do. So, women, you are either much nicer, or less of a braggart. Either way, you win.

But always keep in mind:

  • We do this for our fellow Chicagoans who suffer from food insecurity.
  • We do this together because we are stronger together, as a community, than we are as individuals.
  • We do this for each other and with each other because we are all equally rad.
  • It’s all in good fun!

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Buck up, campers, and keep being excellent to each other. Mush!
