The media may notice and cover you whether you like it or not. Face it: you can’t dress up teams in ridiculous costumes, yelling and pushing shopping carts without attracting some attention.
It’s a good story, and you can use media interest to help gain acceptance and to spread the word on hunger.
Papers and electronic media love good stories, and you can provide them. Think about the medium, and help out by having a well written press release and a few images. If you have a web site, that can have a Press page.
