14,476 Meals for the Hungry

17,371 Pounds of Food Collected

More than $56,000 Raised to Fight Hunger in Chicago

Nearly eight hundred kindred souls gathered on a balmy 40 degree day to create the annual spectacularly-festive, extraordinarily-costumed, epically mobile food drive and charity shopping cart race — CHIditarod XIII. The sun-drenched Chicago streets were filled with more than 250 volunteers and 97 teams of 5 costumed and thoroughly excited humans, raising food and record-breaking funds in the pursuit of feeding the hungry while racing tricked-out shopping carts through 5 themed checkpoint establishments in the name of charity, prizes, and glory. Truly, a spectacle like none other, and a day to long remember.

The annual event raced through Chicago’s West Town Ukrainian Village neighborhoods, visiting five checkpoints each. Mahoney’s, Phyllis’s Musical Inn, Five Star Bar, Roots Handmade Pizza, and Cobra Lounge hosted costumed superstars with their own themes and contests for teams to participate in. All bars generously donate a portion of their proceeds to The CHIditarod Foundation to aid in our epic mission of fighting hunger in Chicago.

CHIditarod is always finding new ways to positively impact our community and those in need. This year we again collected unused toiletries for Sarah’s Circle, a non-profit agency serving women who are homeless or in need of a safe space. They also focus on women needing support because of domestic violence. Thank You to everyone who donated race day, at ChiditaBowl, and at the Burners Without Borders Chicago Winter Ball.

Food Drive

CHIditarod playfully calls itself “probably the world’s largest mobile food drive”, and we could not be more impressed by this year’s food drive success,

With the help of our friends and at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the CHIditarod XIII food drive collected enough food to provide 14,476 meals for Chicago’s hungry. Thank you CHIditarod participants for being amazing all-stars and for making a difference in the lives of many, many people.

Best in Food Drive :: The CHIvengers

The Chivengers avenged hunger this year at superhuman levels. This team brought in 2,525 pounds of food to give 2,104 meals to those in need.

Honorable Food Mentions

Chickiditarods were our second most food drive-driven team, bringing in 1,668 pounds of food, equivalent to 1,390 meals! A HUGE THANK YOU to these teams who help us make sure all Chicagoans have the food they need.

Art Carts

The art carts this year were a small but mighty group, diverse in experience and execution. From virgins who lived in a Yellow Submarine, to a Stone Age Secret Gentlemen’s Club, and the stalwart HoboQ dishing out tapas, everyone enjoyed snacks, music, and of course, FIRE!

Epic Fundraising

To date, the CHIditarod Foundation has give out in grants to local nonprofits who share in our mission to stop hunger in Chicago. This year alone, our racers, volunteers, checkpoints, and organizers — with the help of their families, friends, and communities — raised more than $56,000 in support of this community grants program! Racers and volunteers raised more than ever before.

We will once again be able to fight hunger challenges, supporting community-centered initiatives that address hunger, food scarcity, and education via the CHIditarod Grant Program.

[one_third]

Most Epic Fundraising: 3GS&T

Once again, 3GS&T were the big winners in Fundraising. For the third year in a row they smashed the prior year’s donation record, raising an incredible $10,451.
In 2018, however, they were chased by a new rival, the breakfast cereal characters of Nomeward Bound.

2nd Most Epic Fundraising: Nomeward Bound

In an epic battle that had fans and Coreganizers alike watching their phones until the cutoff of 5:30pm on race day, 3GS&T just barely edged out Nomeward Bound, who finished with $10,207. That is an incredibly small margin. Nomeward Bound are true heroes in our eyes and deserve just as much admiration.

3rd Most Epic Fundraising: The Chidiots

Last year’s challenger, The Chidiots, rounded out the top three with an absolutely stellar amount of $6,244, and we deeply appreciate them – and everyone who contributed – for helping make this year’s grant pool even deeper.

Volunteers

While CHIditarod racers do wondrous things, none would be possible without the more than 250 brave and selfless volunteers that make CHIditarod happen. Volunteers are truly the MVPs of CHIditarod.

[one_half]
Not only do many of them fundraise, they also build the starting and finish lines, create immersive and exciting checkpoint environments, keep you safe while mobile, and have a blast right alongside you. To our volunteers, we honor and salute you all. Thanks.

Visit our grant page to learn about the program and how your organization can apply during the next grant cycle.

A tour through a mobile gallery, led by a boastful but engaging host was this year’s big prize winner. Stretched over two carts, this art collection included six classic paintings, a sculpture garden, graffiti art, a 60-second audio tour, the obligatory velvet ropes, and of course, wine and cheese. Sight, sound, and motion (Munch’s “The Scream” actually did just that…) made for one of the most creative and interactive carts of the day.

This team was so well-loved that they also have been awarded the 2018 People’s Choice Award based on the feedback received from our post-event all-racer surveys. Stellar effort!

Don’t let the balloons and tinsel on this Barbie Dream Closet fool you – these are Power Paper Dolls, not lightweights! The ladies of 3GS&T brought life-sized, laminated cutouts of some of the strongest, most influential women around. From TV pioneer Lucille Ball to astronaut Mae Jemison to Lady Gaga (complete with Meat Dress), and of course, The Notorious RBG, these long-time racers swapped costumes amongst themselves and even other racers and Judges a chance to try on. So many outfits, so little time…[/one_half]

Another art theme takes a top prize as this Van Gogh cart didn’t merely offer up (gummy) sliced ears. A vision of the artist himself signed handmade, original paintings for Judges and timekeepers alike. Autographed on the spot, each one featured an aspect of CHIditarod, from a Chicago flag, to a Hancock Holdup logo, to a shopping cart, all in the setting of an actual Van Gogh painting.

18,404 Meals for the Hungry

 22,085 Pounds of Food Collected

$45,000 Raised to Fight Hunger in Chicago

Eight hundred women, men, astronauts, “school kids”, Vegas show girls, wizards, medicine men, tin men, circus entertainers, volunteers, bananas, philanthropists, leisure enthusiasts and enthusiastic mushers gathered on a balmy 42 degree morning to create the annual spectacular costumed charity shopping cart race epic mobile food drive — CHIditarod XII. The sun-filled streets were filled with nearly 200 volunteers and 113 teams of 5 heavily-costumed humans, raising Food and Funds in the pursuit of feeding the hungry while racing tricked-out shopping carts through 5 themed checkpoint establishments on the thawing streets of Chicago. Truly, a spectacle like none other.

The annual event raced through Chicago’s West Town Ukrainian Village neighborhoods, visiting five checkpoints each. Mahoney’s, Phyllis’s Musical Inn, Five Star, Roots Pizza, and Cobra Lounge hosted costumed superstars with their own themes and contests for teams to participate in. All bars generously donate a portion of their proceeds to The CHIditarod Foundation to aid in the goal of fighting hunger in Chicago.

CHIditarod is always finding new ways to positively impact our community and those in need. This year, over 100 pounds of toiletries were donated to Sarah’s Circle. Sarah’s Circle is a non-profit agency serving women who are homeless or in need of a safe space. They also focus on women needing support because of domestic violence. Thank You to everyone who donated race day, at ChiditaBowl, and at the Burners Without Borders Chicago Winter Ball.

Food Drive

With the help of our friends and at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the CHIditarod XII food drive collected enough food to provide 18,404 meals for Chicago’s hungry. Thank you CHIditarod participants for being amazing all-stars and for making a difference in the lives of thousands of your neighbors.

Best in Food Drive :: The CHIvengers

The CHIvengers avenged hunger to astronomical heights in 2017. This team brought in 1,300 pounds of food to give meals to those in need.

Honorable Food Mentions

Hot-n-Ready Samurai were our second closest team, close behind, bringing in 1,130 pounds of food. Neck and Neck! A HUGE THANK YOU to these teams who help us make sure food is not a top worry for Chicagoans.

2017 saw a new partnership formed between CHIditarod and Kraft Heinz, who generously donated 2,055 lbs of condiments, including ketchup, mustard, mayo, BBQ sauce, and ranch dressing!

Art Carts

THE COOL BUS, ASTRONAUTS, GRILLS, TRAINS AND SHOW GIRLS!

This year’s are carts took to the streets strutting their stuff, passing out freshly cooked tacos, challenging people to games of dodgeball, and providing an “out of this world” experience. Art Carts are those teams who build bigger, crazier, and insanely interactive carts, delighting racers, spectators, and shocking all those who behold them. One team even built and piloted a school bus through the streets!

Epic Fundraising

To date, CHIditarod has given out $95,000 in grants to local nonprofits who share in our mission to stop hunger in Chicago. This year our Racers, volunteers, checkpoints, and organizers — with the help of their families, friends, and communities — raised $45,000 for the CHIditarod Foundation — setting a new CHIditarod record.

In 2017 we will once again fight hunger challenges and support community centered initiatives that address hunger, food scarcity, and education via our CHIditarod Grant Program. Visit our grant page to learn about the program and how your organization can apply during our upcoming 2017 grant cycle.

Most Epic Fundraising: 3GS&T

This year’s fundraising was a battle to the end. The 11th (yes, that’s 11 years in a row) Edition of 3 Girls, a Stash, and a Tail, SMASHED the previous fundraising record. It all came down to the final moments of online donations, when they secured their winning lead, bringing in $7,905.43. Epic.

Their theme was a custom rendition of the Garbage Pail Kids ™, customized to each racer. Yes, that’s a live chia helmet.

2nd Most Epic Fundraising: CHIdiots

In true CHIditarod fashion, the CHIdiots challenged Team 3GS&T to a heated, friendly fundraising rivalry all the way to the end, barely coming in second place with a fundraising total of $7,297.45. They “flew” to their own new heights with an “out of this world” fundraising effort to help secure the 2017 CHIditarod grant program. Truly spectacular.

The CHIdiots outfitted their cart as an Apollo lunar lander. It was huge. And we hear it actually flew.

Volunteers

While CHIditarod racers do wondrous things, none of this would be possible without the 200 brave and selfless volunteers that make the CHIditarod race happen. Volunteers are truly the MVPs of CHIditarod.

Not only do many of them fundraise, they also build the starting and finish lines, create immersive and exciting checkpoint environments, keep you safe while mobile, and have a blast right alongside you. To our volunteers, we honor and salute you all. Thank you.

Though every team comes dressed to impress, the team that really stood out was CHIditarOz & Toto Recall. One of CHIditarod’s most coveted award is the best use of duct tape. There were a few teams who got all “duct’d” out, but this one really “stuck” with us. Their Dick Tracy was suited up in a trench coat made entirely of yellow duct tape, duct tape fedora and all. Those lines were so clean, too.

Just Peachy was in a league of the own, as a rookie CHIditarod team. They had trading cards, gave out peanuts and crackerjacks, had uniforms and really went for a home run bringing a major league performance on race day. This is how you do CHIditarod the first time around. A definite home run.

Fastest Dogs :: That’s Bulls*#t!

CHIditarod is, in fact, a race! Teams race for an average of 5 grueling miles. Thankfully, they have 25 minutes to rest and water their dawgs at each checkpoint. Mushing into history in CHIditarod XII was team “That’s Bulls*#t!”. As they crossed the finish line, they were thoroughly out of breath and looked ready to puke from hitting the pavement so hard. After four years of vying for first place, they finally made it as the Fastest Dawgs! They beat out some heavy competition, the aptly-named “Team Formerly Known as the 2016 Fastest Cart”, vanquishing them from their title.

These are just a few of the incredible achievements from our teams. There are countless other amazing things our participants create; we wish we had the space to showcase them all. To all who co-created the epic that was CHIDitarod XII — we salute you with highest honors.

CHIditarod XII is dedicated to Tom LaPorte, who passed away a few days after CHIditarod XII. Tom was a force in creating, shaping, and guiding CHIditarod. He was instrumental in helping to form the event, set the tone, and provide mentorship and encouragement to us all. His guidance interacting with the City of Chicago, forming partnerships and coalitions, building consensus, and helping others was unparalleled and the reason CHIditarod is as successful as it is today. He participated in the event from start to finish from year one through year twelve. Tom will forever be a part of CHIditarod, and a part of us all.

To all of you — Thank you for a record making year. We love and salute you. Mush!

13,044 Meals for the Hungry

15,625 Pounds of Food Collected

$32,798 Raised to Fight Hunger in Chicago

Eight hundred women, men, grandmas, lunch ladies, go-go dancers, bunnies, sharks, goats, presidents, volunteers, and enthusiastic mushers gathered on a 38 degree morning to create the annual spectacular costumed charity shopping cart race epic mobile food drive — CHIditarod XI. The snow free streets were filled with nearly 200 volunteers and 108 teams of 5 heavily-costumed humans, raising Food and Funds in the pursuit of feeding the hungry while racing tricked-out shopping carts through 5 themed checkpoint establishments on the thawing streets of Chicago. A spectacle like none other.

The annual event raced through West Town and the Ukrainian Village visiting five  checkpoints each. Mahoney’s, Phyliss’s Musical Inn, Five Star, Roots Pizza, and Cobra Lounge hosted costumed superstars with their own themes and contests for teams to participate in. All bars also donate a part of their proceeds to The Chiditarod Foundation to help in the goal of fighting hunger in Chicago.

We are always trying to find new ways to have a positive impact on our community and those in need. This year, over 350 pounds of toiletries were donated to Sarah’s CircleSarah’s Circle is a non-profit agency serving women who are homeless or in need of a safe space. They also focus women needed support because of domestic violence. Thank You to everyone who donated race day, at ChiditaBowl, and at the Burners Without Borders Chicago Winter Ball.

CHIditarod playfully calls itself “probably the world’s largest mobile food drive“, and we could not be more impressed by this year’s food drive success.

With the help of our friends and at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the CHIditarod XI food drive collected enough food to provide 13,044 meals for Chicago’s hungry. Thank you CHIditarod participants for being amazing all-stars and for making a difference in the lives of many, many people.

Don’t let their hot dad bods fool you, they’re serious about fighting hunger. This team brought in 1540.5 pounds of food to give meals to those in need. Wigs Jacked for Jesus was our second closest team to this amount of food bringing in 549.1 pounds of food. A HUGE THANK YOU to these teams who help us make sure food is not a top worry for Chicagoans.

Epic Fundraising

To date, CHIditarod has give out $75,000 in grants to local nonprofits who share in our mission to stop hunger in Chicago. Our Racers, volunteers, checkpoints, and organizers — with the help of their families, friends, and communities, raised $32,798 for the CHIditarod Foundation. We will once again be able to fight hunger challenges, supporting community-centered initiatives that address hunger, food scarcity, and education via the CHIditarod Grant Program.

[one_half]

Chidiots

This year, fundraising was a battle to the end. The Chidiots, in their sixth year racing, went head to head with fellow veterans 3GS & T on their Razoo page to bring it hard. It was down to the final moments of online donations that they were able to secure their lead.

While CHIditarod racers do wonderous things, none would be possible without the 200 brave and selfless volunteers that make CHIditarod happen. Volunteers are truly the MVPs of CHIditarod. Not only do many of them fundraise, they also build the starting and finish lines, create immersive and exciting checkpoint environments, keep you safe while mobile, and have a blast right alongside you. To our volunteers, we honor and salute you all. Thanks.

This team raised an amazing $4,370 in just 48 hours of fundraising. They brought in a large day of cash donations. Also in their sixth year of racing, the fund they brought in alone comes near the amount of  one of the local community grants the CHIditarod Foundation gives.

The Hindenburg rose again to take to the streets of Chicago. The German airship was constructed entirely out of duct tape and the team had historically fitting outfits.

CHIditarod’s now most coveted award is best use of duct tape. There were a few team who got all duct-ed out, but this one really grabbed us. Their costumes went all out and their use of duct tape on their cart really helped set the scene and brought us back to the 1988 hit film.

Ethel and Pearl celebrated in style at this year’s race. The shared their sugar free candies, their love for Burt Reynolds, social media blasted, and even created their own website. They were the sweetest old ladies you could ever meet, and we just want to say “We love you grandma, and happy birthday!”

Being a ChiditaVirgin is not easy thing to do, and this team was fully wet behind the ears. Their cart fell apart, they made some classic rookie mistakes, and though they raced hard, but unfortunately didn’t make it to the awards due to a long day of causing chaos for a good cause. [/one_half]

CHIditarod X

March 7, 2015

22,759 Meals for the Hungry

27,311 Pounds of Food Collected

$38,732 Raised to Fight Hunger in Chicago

Eleven hundred women, men, heroes, philanthropists, rockstars, elephants, volunteers, and enthusiastic mushers gathered on a warm 40 degree morning to create the annual spectacular costumed charity shopping cart race epic mobile food drive — CHIditarod X. The morning sun smiled on nearly 300 volunteers and 130 teams of 5 heavily-costumed humans, raising Food and Funds in the pursuit of feeding the hungry while racing tricked-out shopping carts through 5 themed checkpoint establishments on the thawing streets of Chicago. A spectacle like none other.

Food Drive

CHIditarod playfully calls itself “probably the world’s largest mobile food drive“, and we could not be more impressed by this year’s food drive success.

With the help of our friends and at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the CHIditarod X food drive collected enough food to provide 22,759 meals for Chicago’s hungry. Thank you CHIditarod participants for being amazing all-stars and for making a difference in the lives of many, many people.

Best in Food Drive :: The Chidiots

The Chidiots team — winner of 2015’s Most Overall Food award — collected 8,576 pounds, which destroyed all previous records. The Chiditiots are one of our most epic teams, they raised 3,293 pounds of food last year. Honorable mention goes to Team Jack with an whopping 1,070 pounds. Combined, these two teams collected nearly a third of the total food brought to the race by ALL participants. We’re blown away by these teams and are so thankful they show us what’s really possible.

Art Carts

As always this year’s art carts totally outdid themselves. CHIditarod’s artistry has never been richer as teams amazed onlookers, judges, and each other with the most elaborate, interactive, and fun themes ever concocted — The Chubby Funkadelics. They welded a shopping cart into a platform capable of ushering a live drummer through the streets of Chicago. Naturally, they brought along a second cart shaped like a road crate for all their gear. Their immersive, pop-up performances entertained hundreds of onlookers throughout the day.

Epic Fundraising

Our Racers, volunteers, checkpoints, and organizers — with the help of their families, friends, and communities, raised $38,732.27 for the CHIditarod Foundation. These dollars will support community-centered initiatives that address hunger, food scarcity, and education via the CHIditarod Grant Program. To date the program has granted $45,000 to nonprofits solving Chicago’s hunger challenges.

[one_half]

Action Squad & The Derailers

Two of CHIditarod’s most fabled teams joined forces to create an epic Sci-Fi spectacle and fundraising machine. They built 2 pilotable Tron lightcycles with all the trimmings. Their combined fundraising efforts raised $5,639!! Not far behind were the Coreganizers at $4,495 and Troop Beverly Hills at $2,587* (amounts at the time of the awards ceremony).

While CHIditarod racers do wonderous things, none would be possible without the 350 brave and selfless volunteers that make CHIditarod happen. Volunteers are truly the MVPs of CHIditarod. Not only do many of them fundraise, they also build the starting and finish lines, create immersive and exciting checkpoint environments, keep you safe while mobile, and have a blast right alongside you. To our volunteers, we honor and salute you all. Thanks.

Visit our grant page to learn about the program and how your organization can apply during the next grant cycle.

We cannot say enough about this team. Last year The Chidiots took home 2nd Best In Show and they totally outdid themselves this year. They raised over 8,500 pounds of food. They looked awesome. They could (almost) fly. CHIditarod is lucky to have them.

Best in Show runner up goes to the Avengers. We were obsessed with their Marvel Magic and heroic charm. No one could resist geeking out over them as they strut by. So much swagger. Many pictures with excited kids. So much duct tape.

Fastest Dog goes to Year of Danger. Some would say they were… dangerously… fast. It takes a streamlined cart and serious intensity to win best time at CHIditarod. Hats off to the fearless folk brave enough to sprint through Chicago with a shopping cart in tow.

[one_half last=last]

Best Bribe goes to Disco of Oz. Their bag of Oz goodies (an Honorary PHD, Medal, Baggie of Brains, Heart, Courage, a Barrel of Monkey’s, and rainbow suckers) were extremely effective in swaying our judges. It’s the Chicago way. They also wooed the hearts of our bike marshals.

These dual-carted construction crew returns to win yet another award by garnering the most favor with our participants. Just listen to some of the nice things said about these fine racers…

  • I loved the secret gentleman’s club construction crew
  • I was really impressed with how the two construction themed art carts actually fooled people into thinking they were real work crews
  • The Men at work carts with the bulldozer et al
  • The road construction crew. steam roller and wrecking ball

Talk about llama-drama, team CJ Ownz takes home MHDM, a.k.a the “Ate the Yellow Snow” award. Anyone who found themselves within a 5 foot radius of their llama cart put themselves at risk of getting sprayed by what we can only hope was beer. Shudder.

29,007 Meals for the Hungry

21,788 Pounds of Food Collected

$40,255 Raised to Fight Hunger in Chicago

On March 1, 2014, twelve hundred women, men, gladiators, spies, flight attendants, greasers, highlanders, bananas, knights, and enthusiastic mushers gathered on a brisk 17 degree morning to create the annual spectacular costumed charity shopping cart race and epic mobile food drive — CHIditarod IX. The mercury never rose above freezing, yet that failed to dissuade nearly 400 volunteers and 150 teams of 5 heavily-costumed humans from raising food and funds to fight hunger in Chicago while racing tricked-out shopping carts through 5 themed checkpoint establishments on the frozen streets of Chicago. This is CHIditarod.

Food Drive

Most. Epic. Yet. We playfully call ourselves “probably the world’s largest mobile food drive“, and we are truly awed and impressed by the acomplishments of our teams. The CHIditarod IX food drive will provide 29,007 meals worth of food for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Chiditarod’s checkpoints participated by hosting food barrels before and during race day, with totals forthcoming.

The Chidiots team — winner of 2014’s Most Overall Food award — collected 3,293 pounds, which destroyed all single team day-of collection records. Their cart was a giant pacman, that you could actually play. They also won ChiditaBowl. Serious winning, here. Honorable mention goes to Jack & The Distillers with a massive 2,917 pounds. By their powers combined, these two epic teams collected a whopping one-third of the total food brought to the race by ALL participants. It’s an honor to work with such fine human beings.

Art Carts

2014 Best Art Cart - Dragstars
[clear]
CHIditarod IX enjoyed some amazing art carts this year. CHIditarod’s artistry has never been richer as teams amazed onlookers, judges, and each other with the most elaborate, interactive, and fun themes ever concocted. Teams Dragstars and Top Fool Racers teamed up to transform a couple of carts into rubber-burning drag-racing dragsters. They idled back from the main pack, allowed the path to clear, then left us all in a cloud of smoke. These feats of cart engineering were 18 feet long at least! The Derailers returned decked out in matched leather jackets, astride choppers, pulling their own retro pumping station. And to round out an incredible showing, both teams fundraised (awesomely).

Epic Fundraising

[clear]
Our Racers, volunteers, checkpoints, and organizers — with the help of their families, friends, and communities, raised $40,255 for the CHIditarod Foundation. These dollars will support community-centered initiatives that address hunger, food scarcity, and education through our 2014 CHIditarod grant program, which donated $20,000 to Chicago-based charities in 2013. If your 501(c)3 organization is interested in applying for consideration for a grant, please contact us.

The Area Three Allstars, one of CHIditarod’s most fabled teams — and winner of the 2014 Most Epic Fundraiser award — raised $4,502 through a multitude of fundraising initiatives. They were hotly followed by The Derailers with $4,005* and Gutterballs at $2,573* (amounts at the time of the awards ceremony).

While CHIditarod focuses awards on our racers, of equal if not greater importance are the 400 brave and selfless volunteers that make CHIditarod happen. Volunteers are truly the MVPs of CHIditarod, joining in the fundraising this year with epic results — raising a combined total of more than $7,300! Special mention goes to Cindy Hogan ($375), Beth Mygind ($330), the Bike Marshal squadron ($665) and the Coreganizers ($5923.24).

Best In Show, People’s Choice Award

[clear]
When a basically life-size airplane cart and a team of gorgeous cross-dressing stewardesses came through registration we knew we had seen a winner, and our racers knew too! This year’s Best in Show AND People’s Choice award goes to the Chubby Stewardesses, who put on an awesome show of true ‘Rod spirit. Stay classy, Chubby Stewardesses– we’ll always fly your friendly skies.
Here are some shoutouts from our racers:

Their cart was TIGHT – construction, paint, integrated speakers…, outfits well-suited, incorporated gifts into their cart, kept it light, fun, funny, and festive.

They gave me kisses with their bright red lipstick and a little bottle of liquor. MY FAVORITE KIND OF LIQUOR.

Chubby Airlines has a runway guide guy and a passenger waiting in advance at each checkpoint when they arrived. Impressive prep for a joke. Cannot say enough about how incredibly well executed they were, down to every detail… the pilot, if you spoke to him, would only answer you via the radio mic, starting with “this is your captain speaking”… just genius.

The Chubby Stewardesses were always in character, cheerful, rocking the costumes boldly in the cold and snow, very positive people.

Best in Show runner up went to the Disco Death Star, however as cart-abandoning Wall-of-Shamers they are being stripped of their title! Therefore, second place Best In Show goes to the Chidiots (ChiditaBowl and food donation champions), who played a giant game of Pacman through the Chicago streets.

Third place Best in Show goes to Raiders of the Lost Cart, who built a ginormous rolling boulder on their cart. Fortunately, their dashing Indy didn’t end up smooshed in Wicker Park!

Best Sabotage

The 2014 first place Sabotage team, CJ Ownz is once again are awarded the title. They leveraged their now-traditional style via Willy Wonka-style Chiditarod Golden Tickets screwed on to the wheels of rival teams’ carts. The screws were stripped and unremovable save by a feat of superhuman strength (and bike marshal tools). All hail, CJ Ownz, three-time Sabotage champions, and all around good guys who take their cart home!

CHIditarod VIII mushed into the record books on Saturday March 2, 2013. Costumed teams of 5 humans ran a 4.8ish mile race between 5 of 7 local checkpoints in Chicago’s West Town, Wicker Park, and Ukranian Village neighborhoods. Uniting 149 racing teams and nearly 300 volunteers, some have said it was the greatest CHIditarod to date.

Our teams, checkpoints, and volunteers catapulted CHIditarod’s hunger fighting efforts to new heights in 2013. The Greater Chicago Food Depository returned as the beneficiary of our epic food drive. They reported a total weigh-in of a whopping 17,133 pounds, equating to 14,128 meals to feed Chicago’s hungry. Our checkpoints held food drives for the first time, netting 929* pounds.

The Chidiots team — winner of 2013’s Most Overall Food award — collected 1,223 pounds, shattering all single team day-of collection records. Honorable mention goes to Jack & The Mixers with a massive 1,023 pounds and the Bathing Beauties with 875 pounds. Consider this — the total amount of food raised our first year was 937.5 pounds. [clear]
The Area Three Allstars, one of CHIditarod’s most fabled teams — and winner of the 2013 Most Epic Fundraiser award — raised $8,968 through a multitude of fundraising initiatives. ** They were hotly followed by The Derailers ($7,801.69) and Action-Squad ($6,705.00). We were and are blown away!!

The primary beneficiary for CHIditarod VIII fundraising is our very own NFP – The CHIditarod Foundation. In the upcoming months, the foundation will be providing grants to local organizations who are combating hunger here in Chicago. Read more about the Foundation and our mission.

cj ownz - 2013 - justin goh
Reclaiming their title as Chiditarod’s — masters of Sabotage 2013 — CJ Ownz returned with the cart-stopping doom of their ChiditaROD, which they anchored into the wheels of their victims cart’s. The true spirit of their sabotage was capped off by a star-headed screw and festively decorated ROD.

Best Art Cart

Derailers 2013-Steve Stearns
[clear]
The Derailers returned to defend their title of Best Art Cart. Their efforts were well deserved, with a theme of 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, they built a scale replica of Captain Nemo’s Nautilus with the enormous giant squid from the deep. Bubbles abounded as they “swam” down the street in full underwater gear. Their attention to detail is simply astounding. In second place was the Tempus Fugitives, who built an incredible, functional Time Machine.

Best In Show

action squad 2013
[clear]
Never one to disappoint, Action Squad returned for their 8th consecutive year to win 2013’s Best in Show. This years contribution to the CHIditarod came in the form of the Action Squad Diner. Complete with hand-made barstools, flashing sign, “orders up” bell, and laminated menu they served up food themed after each of their past cart entries. Their lovely waitresses took orders and kept the coffee flowing while the busboy mopped up any spills.

CHIditarod’s artistry has never been richer as teams amazed onlookers, judges, and each other with the most elaborate, interactive, and fun themes ever concocted. Additionally, we were graced with seven Art Carts in 2013, including the return of 5th year beloved BBQ veterans HoboQ and a fiery new team Hellzapoppin’ who served up popcorn with all the trimmings. The Secret Gentlemen’s Club was back with two carts this year, an enormous cake and an even more enormous “present” with a continuous birthday party inside. The cake included delicious baked goods — netting them the Best Food Cart prize. Our taste buds are still tingling.

People’s Choice Award

No CHIditarod results would be complete without a few after-the-race prizes. As anyone who’s participated in CHIditarod will tell you – there’s far more going on than any one, let alone twenty, persons can observe and acurately judge, especially in such a short amount of time.  It takes days, weeks, months for all of the pictures, footage, stories, and bruises to heal. That’s why we honor a few select teams after the glory of race day. This year we bring you the People’s Choice award, resoundingly going to: Action-Squad. Check out the quotes from our post-race survey:

ChiditaPROM 2013 Results

Ladies of ChiditaProm 2013Last week’s Prom was a night of dancing, big hair, and 80′s flair. It was certainly a night to remember. Thank You CHIditaroders for coming to Rodder High’s “A Rod’ To Remember” 80’s ChiditaProm. This was our first-ever all-racer, all-volunteer, all-participant fundraiser. It was a smashing success, raising $3,902.65* for The CHIditarod Foundation!

Photos? You want photos? Gnarly. Check out the Official Prom Photo gallery by Rodder High photographer Justin Goh. The RedEye got into the spirit, too. Here’s their prom gallery by photographer Hilary Higgins.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated items for our prize drawing! There was some really amazing items. There were 162 of you who braved the cold to party down with us in massive style. It was definitely a night to remember. As promised, here are totals for each team that fundraised by selling tickets and donating items to the prize drawing. Each open bar prom ticket cost $35. $20 of each ticket went directly to the bar, netting a total of $15 fundraised per ticket. Open Bar tickets cost $20 and 100% of that amount goes towards fundraising. The amounts below are the ticket sales (minus the cost to the bar) combined with the amount of funds raised in the prize drawing.

CHIditarod VII

A smashing success! On March 3, 2012, 161 teams registered/151 teams raced and almost 275 volunteers participated in this year’s epic CHIditarod.  Teams ran a 4.8ish mile race between 5 of 8 checkpoints in Chicago’s Wicker Park, Bucktown, West Town and Ukranian Village neighborhoods.

2012-tons of foodCHIditarod catapulted its anti-hunger efforts to new heights in 2012.  Greater Chicago Food Depository benefited from this year’s food donations.  We received 12,164 pounds of food day of the race (the majority of that came in the morning; we thank you racers for getting with our new bring-your-food-to-the-starting-line program so quickly!)  Area 3 All-Stars used their prize money, fundraising and beer tips to raise a total of 15,214 12,164 ** pounds of food! CHIditarod’s total amount of food donations for the Greater Chicago Food Depository is a whopping 27,378 21,677 ** pounds — a new CHIditarod record.  The Couch Dogs team brought in the most food on race-day — a massive 260 lbs!  The Cottage Grove Heights Community Coalition and the Concerned Neighbors of Burnside were the beneficiary organizations of all monetary donations, equaling $18,500.  Our most epic monetary donations came from The Derailers with $6,126.69 raised!  This significant amount of funds will be used to establish a community garden in the Cottage Grove Heights neighborhood, which is known as a “food desert” in Chicago.

CHIditarod’s rich artistic traditions continue to evolve to greater and more elaborate heights each year.  2012 did not disappoint, with 7 Art Carts running the race.  The Atlantic City Roads Committee featured a 2 cart mobster “bootlegging operation” — complete with a mobile office where the Boss conducted “business”.  Gentleman (g)’s Photography Studio (and Definitely Not a Speakeasy) offered a fully-immersive respite from the chaos of race day and some of the best company one could hope for.  The HoboQ championed its 4th CHIditarod season, offering the best BBQ available anywhere on the North Side.  CHIditarod superstars The Derailers brought a hand-made WW1-era fighter plane complete with joystick controller, machine-gun sound effects, and a bombed-out, smoking French countryside.  And while definitely not an art cart (as they follow ALL racer rules to the letter, including fitting their cart through a standard-sized door), CHIditarod elites Action Squad conjured a 6 foot DRAGON with glowing red eyes, smoke-filled movable jaws, who answered to the name “Tim”.

The weather didn’t let us down.  There was no 50 degree day in sight, with race-day conditions topping out at a brisk 38 degrees with flurries of snow, dogs, and an occasional cat.  Any CHIditarod without rain is glorious.  Teams conquered the traditional 4.8ish miles between the traditional 5 assigned checkpoints ending at the Bottom Lounge.  CHIditarod legends Environmental Encroachment magic circus band began the race with glorious fanfare, as well as ringing in our awards ceremony at the finish line.

No CHIditarod results would be complete without a few after-the-race prizes.  As anyone who’s participated in CHIditarod will tell you – there’s far more going on than any 1, let alone 20, people can observe and acurately judge, especially in such a short amount of time.  It takes days, weeks, months for all of the pictures, footage, stories, and bruises to heal.  That’s why we honor a few select teams after the glory of race day.  This year we have two such awards.  The Coreganizer’s Choice, and the People’s Choice award.

Coreganizer’s Choice – Atlantic City Roads Committee – “The Big Shoulders Award”

atlantic-city-roads-committee
Many stories about many excellent team cross our.. desk.. after the race comes to a close.  However, one team stands alone, and deserves the highest honors for their original efforts.  Here’s one of their stories, as told by a first-year volunteer.

I was at Phyllis’s helping with the Mad Libs Challenge when I was discretely tapped on my shoulder.  I then turned around to see a man dressed in a dark colored trench coat with a suit underneath and a nice hat with a feather in it.  He then whispers “Ma’am, My Boss would like to discuss some business with you in his office.”  I then replied “What kind of business is your boss in?”  He says “I cannot disclose that information at this time.  Please follow me this will only take a moment.”  So we walk out through the side door into the beer garden.  There we find the Atlantic City Roads Committee.  They had a full-on desk with wood-panelled wall backdrop, a grandfather clock, leather chair, and an old phone.  Behind them they had their car(t) and what would look like a bootlegging liquor operation.  He then explained to me they were looking to discuss a possible bribery. He needed votes and to leave this checkpoint as soon as possible for he had more business to attend to.  He then told me he deals in Whiskey.  As you can imagine my ears perked up!  I explained to him that he had come to the right lady for these sorts of dealings.  I like to talk and do a lot of it and for the right price I do my best to get him what he needs.  He then had his secretary Lady ( dressed to the 9s ) hand me a pint of Seagrams 7.  As we were in our meeting a group of my friends came up behind me and interrupted a bit.  I pointed out that I came with an entourage and it might just take a little more bribery to get the job done.  He then explained that he had a limited amount of resources but then reached into his inner pocket of his trench coat and handed me another bottle. He said he had a good feeling I would do what was needed for his team to be recognized for their efforts.  His top henchmen then politely and quietly showed me out. I and he then walked up to the time keepers and brought them Whiskey to get them moving.  Throughout our whole dubious transaction the whole team was in perfect character.  Right after their dealings at this location they then packed up their whole outfit for the next.  This team did a wonderful job at capturing the Italian-American gangster/Prohibition – era feel.  They really had the spirit of the event and what would appear what CHIditarod is looking for in the way of originality and stand out uniqueness!

This was my first year of experiencing CHIditarod.   I feel honored and blessed to have been a part of something so unique and impacting.  Thank You to everyone involved – it was truly a eye opening and inspiring event.

The People’s Choice Award – Action Squad

Action Squad Dragon Smoke 2012
As chosen by the people of CHIditarod – the racers and volunteers – on their post-rod surveys.  The overwhelming winner is Action Squad, a team that needs no introduction.  Here’s a snippet of what you – the PEOPLE – had to say about Action Squad in 2012.

A charming example of competitive spirit and chivalry all live long day.
Action Squad are very good peoples.
AMAZEBALLS.
Awesome theme and concept.
The dragon was awesome. I honestly think it’s pretty self-explanatory.
The giant dragon was awesome, they even beheaded it!
Because they flat-out RULE!!!
Because they were nice and fun and had a great idea and were really into it.
So much work and details in their carts. Totally amazeballs!
That was a sweet cart, plus they brought the head into Bottom Lounge.
The level of detail and crafstmanship they put into their dragon cart + team outfits/character + fundraising abilities + bringing 75 lbs of food + overall good sportsmanship.
The most impressive cart I have ever seen.
Their cart was amazing and their costumes appeared period appropriate and authentic.
Their passion keeps the fire in my belly.
They have the overall spirit of CHIditarod.

This amazing event would not happen without our fantastic teams, dedicated volunteers and amazing donors. THANK YOU all for your support, participation, creativity, blood, sweat, and beers.  And for evolving CHIditarod to newer and more incredible levels each year.

Please recall that while your best bet to find lost articles is to contact bars directly, we may still have some insight to Lost/Found items; and we are still collating information for the Wall of Shame, so that we can get your deposits back to their deserving homes along with the carts that were taken (if you are one of the few still waiting, please email your cart return photo to cartvixen@chiditarod.org ASAP).

Chiditarodders big and small, veteran and noob, racer and volunteer: THANK YOU.  Bask in the glory of a job well done, congratulate yourselves for serving Chicago’s hungry, and keep your creative fires lubricated.  Chiditarod VIII approaches.  Mush.

** Correction: Information supplied to us in 2012 to convert cash donations to GCFD from one of our teams (Area 3 Allstars) into food poundage is not consistent with how GCFD currently reports food donations in 2013. The conversion rate provided in 2012 was $1 = 2.33 lbs of food; the rate provided in 2013 is $1 = 1.8 lbs of food. Therefore the totals in 2012 of 27,378 lbs of food have been updated to more accurately reflect 12,164 lbs of physical food poundage collected on race day and $5,285.09 of funds contributed by Chiditarod team Area 3 All-Stars (equating to 9,513 lbs of food) for a new grand total race day contribution of 21,677 lbs. Monetary donations to the Cottage Grove Heights Community Garden remain unchanged. We regret any confusion, and we are deeply grateful to all of our donors and participants. We strive for the utmost transparency with all calculations. We will be reporting 2013’s totals using GCFD’s stated method, which is expressed as “meals served”.

Chiditarod VI

CHIditarod VI exceeded all expectations! On March 5, 2011; 146 teams and close to 200 volunteers participated in yet another epically large and successful CHIditarod!

This year the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation benefited from both Food donations equating to “breaking news flash” 19Klbs/8.6 metric tons! AND Monetary donations just tipping over $18.5K. This is 7x the amount of direct money donations from the previous year!! And again Area 3 Allstars came through with over 3 tons of food, plus a cheese plate to make it fancy! But seriously, we couldn’t pull this thing off without the generous support of many a volunteer, racer and these fine upstanding organizations & people that donated time, resources, and materials to help bring about pretty much the best day of the year! We THANK YOU for making CHIditarod feel better than any holiday/birthday morning in recollection!

Here’s are drum-core call out of all the fine folks that donated cold-hard-cash to the cause – our complete list of monetary donations made to CAHF. Including all teams that raised funds via the GiveForward website (making it simple, easy and fun to jump on the bandwagon to help your team pull ahead in the race and offered up great viewing of the tenacious & awesome battle towards glory for our top fundraisers – bringing in $4000+ and $5000+ respectively), plus teams who either were not present to collect prize monies or graciously donated their award straight back to CAHF, plus close to all our checkpoints kicking back a portion of the days profits!

Chiditarod is and always will be a charitable and sponsor-free event. Various organizations throughout Chicago and the local region donated time, expertise, goods and goodwill to this year’s Chiditarod and our chosen charity – The Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation. We’d like to publically thank the following non-exhaustive list of folks and organizations.

Food/Clothing/Other Donations:

And while It’s hard to say enough about all the crazy-amazing-beautiful-inspiring-people that make CHIditarod possible, we continue to cherish our checkpoints through the years (new and old alike) who treat us and YOU right, we are thankful to have such great businesses in our community that love a good time! Go support them as they support us!

Checkpoints:

Please recall our full list of 2011 Prize & Time Results is still top of minds; our Surveys continue to be best way to get your feedback & experiences applied to future years of planning, that while your best bet to find lost articles is to contact bars directly, we may still have some insight to Lost/Found items; and we are still collating information for the Wall of Shame, so that we can get your deposits back to their deserving homes along with the carts that were taken (if you are one of the few still waiting, please email your cart return photo to cartvixen@chiditarod.org ASAP).

Our 2011 Gallery is now up. Please email us links to your photos, videos, and awesome stories and we’ll post them in your honor.

Two other areas of note:

I. We DO have 2011 Merchandise available if you happened to miss out. Due to the uniqueness of each item, we’ll ask for some identifying details to help us match you with your new apparel. Your request must include 1. gender, 2. size, 3. color/design/style (aka black/wings/hat or pink/graffiti cart/tank or even red/logo/longsleeve). Go to the ChiRod Store to make your purchase.

II. We revamp and add to our Sabotage rules each year, based on a few bad apples out there that a) don’t know what creative vs destructive means, b) don’t pay attention to the rules to begin with, or c) would like to race and be merry without having to always be on the defensive we WILL be taking measures to ensure a fun/safe/creative race for EVERYONE next year. Be Forewarned, we are watching!
